Project Blue Book Case File
Maysville, KentuckyFebruary 1963
Summary
On the evening of February 8, 1963, a man driving near Maysville, Kentucky spotted an unusual object through the trees on a hillside to the west of his location. He pulled over to get a better look.
The object appeared round, roughly 30 feet in diameter, hovering at what the witness estimated to be about 200 feet above the ground. It displayed two red lights opposite each other and two blue lights spaced evenly around its perimeter. Almost immediately, the object tilted so it was vertical to the earth's surface, where it had been horizontal before, and began to move at tremendous speed. As it departed, only the red lights remained visible. The sound accompanying the object was similar to an aircraft. The entire sighting lasted about 30 seconds. A second witness also observed red lights as the object flew over a nearby highway heading west.
The sighting was reported to local authorities and eventually forwarded to the U.S. Air Force for investigation. A team from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, including Dr. Allen Hynek, examined the case. The initial concern that the object's reported behavior might not conform to known aircraft capabilities led investigators to contact the Strategic Air Command. Their check revealed that on the night of February 8, a low-level training mission was underway near Lexington, Kentucky, at an altitude of 2,000 feet. The flight path could have passed over Maysville. The investigators concluded the sighting was most likely a military aircraft on a routine training mission, and witnesses were notified of this determination.
