Summary

On July 26, 1949, a civilian near Augusta, Kentucky, reported seeing a shaft of light in the sky at regular intervals over about one hour. The person wrote to the Air Force, which replied by letter. The Air Force conclusion was "other (ground search lights)." The report became part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.

The Air Force reply said the information did not have enough detail for a positive identification. However, it noted a marked similarity between a searchlight beam and what was reported.

The Air Force explained that searchlights able to project a beam in the way described are often used at carnivals, fairs, and other public gatherings. The letter thanked the writer for reporting the matter.
