Summary

On the night of October 13, 1961, two women in Los Angeles observed an unusual object hovering at low altitude over their residential area. The object displayed a brilliant light like a spotlight, hovered briefly, then shot rapidly toward the northeast and hovered again. A string of brilliant lights lit up along its sides and then went dark. The witnesses watched for eight to ten minutes as the clear night sky held no clouds. The object vanished suddenly. The Air Force received their report around 9:45 p.m.

The sighting caught the attention of Air Force officials at the Aerospace Systems Division in Los Angeles. A staff duty officer documented the account and forwarded it to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, where the Foreign Technology Division handles UFO reports. Officials there noted the initial report lacked sufficient detail for a solid conclusion. They requested that a detailed questionnaire be sent to both witnesses to gather more precise information about what they had seen.

The witnesses completed the Air Force technical questionnaire in late October 1961. Their responses provide additional context, though the OCR quality of the handwritten sections makes some details difficult to read with complete certainty. The document shows the women lived in or near the residential sections of Los Angeles and were outdoors when they noticed the object.

The official Air Force evaluation of the case, recorded on the case card at the file's opening, lists the conclusion as "probably balloon." The Air Force noted that the object displayed characteristics consistent with a research balloon launch, and that aircraft from nearby Hughes Aircraft and other local aerospace companies in the area were observed following the object. This appears to have influenced the assessment. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, containing 15 pages.
