Summary
On July 16, 1956, in Los Angeles, California, a civilian reported one object at about 11:00 p.m. local time. It was a ground visual sighting. The object was in view for several minutes.
The object was round and red. Its size was unknown. At first the witness thought it was a blimp. It then became a ball of fire and disappeared. A control tower account placed the object at about 2,000 feet, moving in a southeasterly direction about seven or eight degrees above the horizon, at a blimp-like pace. A check showed no blimp or plane in the area at the time.
The Air Force agreed with the reporting officer. The Project 10073 record card, the official record for unidentified flying object reports, concluded that a lack of sufficient data prevented an accurate analysis.
