MKUltra Subproject 96

1959 to 1960 · 22 documents · 30 pages

Summary

This file documents MKUltra Subproject 96, which funded a preliminary study of group interview methods for eliciting personal decisions. The surviving paperwork shows a grant of $34,465.00 allocated on August 3, 1959, for research conducted by a redacted investigator at a redacted institution. A second payment of $1,503.75 was requested in January 1960 as the second quarterly installment. An October 1959 memo from a redacted program officer to a redacted recipient describes a $6,015.00 grant (half-year budget for 1959-1960) to support preliminary investigation using audio and photographic equipment. The project aimed to interview groups of people to collect data on decision-making processes, with techniques to be applied across multiple institutions. A detailed budget listed expenses including travel, tape recorders, cameras, equipment, and secretarial help. The memo stipulates that research funds be used only for the designated study, that terminal reports and accounting records be provided, and that no profit accrue to any individual.
