1955 to 1956 · 18 documents · 27 pages
Summary
MKUltra Sub-Project 43 funded research on hypnosis and suggestibility from 1955 to 1956. The surviving paperwork shows a beginning budget of $5,000.00 for the fiscal year July 1, 1955, to June 30, 1956. Expenditures included salaries of $2,704.50, office supplies, telephone, travel, air conditioning, and tape recorder costs, totaling $4,692.79 with 15 percent overhead of $750.00, resulting in an over-expenditure of $442.79. The research proposal, submitted by a Professor of Psychiatry whose name is redacted, describes experiments on hypnotizability and suggestibility influenced by pharmacological means, environmental manipulation including sensory isolation, and psychophysiological responses to stress using hypnotic techniques and autonomic drugs. The proposal mentions preliminary clinical research during 1955-56 that identified drugs effective in inducing hypnotic states and deepening trances, with plans to continue and extend experiments during 1956-67.
