Summary

On March 16, 1961, military observers reported an object over the Mediterranean Sea near 41 degrees 27 minutes north, 5 degrees 52 minutes west, about 7:30 p.m. The object was meteor-like and larger than usual. It left a smoke trail for about three minutes. The higher part of the smoke trail was dark in color and drifted rapidly.

On Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports, the conclusion was probably astronomical. The comments said that although the duration of the main object was not reported, the characteristics were those of a meteor.
