Summary
On July 25, 1962, two Air Force officers aboard a T-33 aircraft about 10 miles northwest of Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, reported an object. The object was in sight for about 3 seconds. The aircraft was on a heading of 118 degrees at 31,500 feet.
The object was a round orange fireball, about the size of a nickel held at arm's length, trailing thin black smoke. There was one object. It appeared at the one o'clock high position, about 4,000 feet above the aircraft, and descended straight down. It disappeared into an undercast at about 28,000 feet. The smoke remained for about 2 minutes. The witnesses were two captains and a major assigned to Tactical Air Command.
This report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The intelligence officer noted it could possibly have been a meteorite, but said no other reports had been received. The Air Force noted the object had the characteristics of a meteor sighting.
