Project Blue Book Case File
WORCHESTER, MASS., November 1954November 1954
Summary
On November 12, 1954, the crew of a Mohawk Airlines flight reported seeing two bright green lights while flying between Worcester, Massachusetts, and Boston. The first light appeared at 6:25 p.m. (1825 hours) southwest of Worcester, heading toward the east. The second appeared about twenty minutes later west of Westover Air Force Base, heading northeast. Both objects were described as enormous in size. The first seemed to be heading toward the ground, and the second also appeared to be descending. The sightings lasted only a few seconds each.
An aircraft pilot and crew members were also flying in the area and reported seeing what they believed was one object that looked like two because of distortion through the airplane's canopy window. That object appeared in front of their aircraft at an elevation of 35 degrees, later descended to the right, and then exploded in a green flash that lasted about one second. Tower operators at Wilmington Airport confirmed seeing similar lights. Unconfirmed reports also came in from Atlantic City, New Jersey, and McGuire Air Force Base.
The Air Force investigation notes that both observers and reporting officers believed the objects were meteors. The index card evaluation indicates the Air Force classified the sighting as "probably balloon," though the brief summary in the case file suggests "a meteor" as the explanation. The OCR quality of pages 6, 7, and 8 is too degraded to extract additional details about the investigation's conclusion.
The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, comprising 8 pages.
