McGuire AFB, NEW JERSEYDecember 1952
Summary
On December 8, 1952, military personnel at McGuire Air Force Base in Trenton, New Jersey, witnessed an unusual flying object that the U.S. Air Force ultimately classified as unidentified. Over the course of roughly two hours, from 8:00 p.m. to 10:05 p.m., multiple observers reported seeing a bright light of varying colors and intensity, while radar operators tracked anomalous signals on their scopes.
The primary witness was a pilot who was flying at approximately 10,000 feet when he spotted what appeared to be a round light below his aircraft. The light changed colors from white to red to amber as it moved. The pilot attempted to maneuver his aircraft to intercept the object, climbing to 22,000 feet, but the light remained visible in roughly the same location and appeared to maintain an altitude below his plane. After about ten minutes of observation, the pilot lost sight of the object. At no time did the pilot detect any sound or exhaust coming from the light, nor did ground observers notice the physical form of any aircraft.
A second observer, stationed on the ground at Mount Holly, New Jersey, reported seeing a bright object approximately 15 degrees above the horizon in a southwest direction. This observer watched the light for about one hour, noting that its intensity fluctuated, causing it to appear to swell from the size of a small circle to a larger, star-like shape. The light's color varied between white and yellow. The object's course remained largely straight except for one small westward deflection.
Radar operators at McGuire also made contact attempts. While visual observers were tracking the light, radar operators tried to pick up a target but reported negative results from their efforts.
The investigating officers noted that weather conditions at the time were favorable: visibility was unrestricted, and there were only scattered low clouds. The pilots and radar personnel involved were described as reliable and experienced, with little tendency toward dramatization. No meteorological conditions were identified that might explain the sighting. The investigation concluded that no conventional explanation could be determined.
