Project Blue Book Case File
HADDENFIELD NJ, July 1952July 1952
Summary
On July 16, 1952, at around 8:50 p.m., a family driving home near Haddenfield, New Jersey, saw a strange object in the sky. The witnesses included a husband, wife, and three young children. They reported seeing a bright, perfectly round sphere of white light with no visible means of propulsion.
The object moved from west to east, then suddenly changed direction and traveled north. It appeared and disappeared in stages. The family saw it for about ten to twelve seconds, watched it vanish for roughly five seconds, then saw it reappear for another five to ten seconds before it disappeared for good. No one saw it again after that final disappearance.
An Air Force investigation followed. On July 17, 1952, at 2215 hours (10:15 p.m.), Captain Chnneepeep, an officer at Fort McGuire Air Force Base, received a telephone call reporting the sighting. The Air Force then sent S/Sgt Dennis G. Washburn, an Intelligence Operations Technician, to interview the family and gather details.
The investigation also looked into weather balloon releases in the area. According to military communications, a balloon had been released at North Philadelphia Airport at 2155 hours (9:55 p.m.) on July 16. The balloon was 32 grams in size and was tracked visually for 3,700 meters. However, other weather stations in the area reported no balloon releases between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on July 16. The file does not state a final conclusion about what the object was.
