Wake Island, June 1957June 1957
Summary
On June 13, 1957, at Wake Island, a civilian control tower operator and his wife observed an unusual aerial phenomenon at 1:44 a.m. While walking along the beach near the south edge of the island, they heard a buzzing sound overhead similar to a turbojet but not as loud or high-pitched. They saw two distinct bluish-white vapor trails forming at about 600 feet altitude. Each trail was about 200 feet long with a 50-foot break between them. The trails were 12 to 14 inches in diameter, formed overhead, and rapidly dissipated after several seconds on a heading of about 255 degrees. The witness estimated the speed of the contrail formation at about 600 mph. An RTV Buno 31641 had landed on the runway earlier, and pilots reported no unusual observations. The control tower operator had 11 and a half years of experience and was accustomed to observing jet aircraft at low altitudes.
