Wilmington, DelawareJuly 1957
Summary
On July 31, 1957, two people in Wilmington, Delaware saw a round, dime-sized object that appeared white or silver in color. A friend called their attention to it because the object seemed unusual. The witnesses watched it move across the sky at a very high altitude and at very high speed, heading roughly west. The object disappeared into clouds after five to six minutes of observation.
The sighting took place during daylight hours in very cloudy conditions. According to weather data in the file, clouds ranged from scattered to broken layers, with a high overcast at about 6,200 feet. Visibility extended roughly 8 miles. The witnesses reported no distinctive markings on the object.
The Air Force's investigation found no explanation for the sighting. A senior controller at the 34th Air Division (Defense) noted that despite the sighting occurring over a populated area, no other observers reported seeing the object. The file does not indicate that any additional investigation was conducted or that any conclusion was reached about what the object might have been.
