Summary
# UFO Sighting Off Labrador Coast, June 1952
On June 24, 1952, at approximately 2155 (9:55 p.m.) Greenwich Civil Time, a U.S. Air Force transport aircraft encountered radio contact attempts with an unidentified aircraft roughly 35 miles south of ocean station vessel 4YB off the coast of Labrador. The unidentified object was reported flying in a westerly direction, but repeated attempts to establish radio communication on standard frequencies failed.
The aircraft attempting contact, a C-54 transport (Aircraft No. 2714), was positioned about 80 miles northwest of the ocean station when its crew observed radar targets on the vessel's radar scope. One radar blip matched their own position, while a second radar target appeared 35 miles south of the station. The C-54 crew stated that station vessel 4YB had spent approximately fifteen minutes trying to reach the unidentified aircraft without success on three different radio frequencies: 121.65 megacycles (the standard aviation distress band), 6543 kilocycles, and 3270 kilocycles.
The Air Force report identified three possible explanations for the mysterious object. It may have been operating on frequencies other than those monitored. Alternatively, it could have been a classified aircraft maintaining radio silence for operational security. A third possibility was that it represented a "terrestrial" test mission involving either a friendly or potentially unfriendly aircraft engaged in a specific type of operation.
The aircraft landed at 2350 (11:50 p.m.) Greenwich Civil Time on June 24, and the crew was questioned for additional details. No definitive identification of the unknown contact was made. The complete case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, spanning 35 pages.
