Project Blue Book Case File
Pacoima, Calif, July 1957July 1957
Summary
On July 31, 1957, in Pacoima, California, a person reported seeing a bright, round object about the size of a dime moving slowly across the sky from southwest to west. The object was white and appeared to blink on and off. The witness observed it for about 25 minutes before it blinked out completely. The object made no sound and was reportedly at an elevation of 51 degrees above the horizon when it disappeared.
The Air Force investigation noted that the object's position and movement were consistent with the star Arcturus, which was visible in that area of the sky at the time. A first lieutenant with the Air Defense Command speculated that the sighting might have been a civilian aircraft at a distance too far away for sound to be heard, and that its faulty tail light could account for the blinking appearance.
The case was evaluated by the Air Force as unknown, though no definitive conclusion appears in the file. The complete case file, comprising seven pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
