Summary

On August 29, 1954, a Dutch airline pilot flying near Prince Christian, Greenland, observed what he described as a formation of dark or lenticular (lens-shaped) objects. The pilot estimated the objects were between 20 and 30 miles away and watched them for about 10 minutes. The objects appeared to number three or four and seemed to maneuver in formation, changing course during the sighting. No contrails (jet exhaust trails) were visible.

The objects stayed roughly two miles north of the aircraft's flight path. The pilot flew parallel to them initially, then they changed course as well. Despite the proximity and visibility of the sighting, ground radar stations and air traffic control facilities in the area detected no signal from the objects. This lack of radar confirmation was noted as significant in the investigation.

The case was routed through multiple military intelligence channels, including the Air Force's Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) and regional air defense commands. Investigators found no conventional explanation readily available. The Air Force's official evaluation of the case was listed as "unknown."
