Summary

On October 11, 1954, near Marloboro, Maryland, a civilian observer reported seeing one object for ten minutes. The object appeared to be the size of a baseball, yellow in color, changing to red. It flew at an estimated 5 miles per hour at an altitude of 8,000 to 12,000 feet with no sound. The object moved upward and north. Motion was observed without optical or electronic equipment. Several aircraft were observed in the vicinity at the time of sighting. Local weather stations were checked and no balloons were reported released at the time. The Air Force concluded the sighting was a balloon.

Speed of 5 mph of object thid size at this altitude would be difficult to note. Some inconsistancy on this point with a duration of 10 minutes. No report on manner of disappearance, however the general description and flight characteristics are in accord with a balloon observation.
