Summary

On October 23, 1957, in Mannasquam, New Jersey, an unknown object was reported. A civilian witness in their driveway observed a sphere-shaped object with light and silver coloring. The object produced a very pronounced vapor trail with intermittent breaks and had no visible wings. It headed northeast, made a sharp turn to the northwest, and made several more turns ending toward the southwest. The observation occurred between 9:45 p.m. and 10:52 p.m. local time. An engineer at Signal Laboratory Fort Monmouth also reported one aircraft in the vicinity based on speed and altitude estimates of 232-352 mph at 32,000-35,000 feet. An intelligence staff officer noted that vapor trails were observed in the New York City vicinity during the same time period and suggested the object was probably a bomber or fighter aircraft at very high altitude. The case was evaluated as unknown.
