Project Blue Book Case File
Louisiana, May 1963May 1963
Summary
On May 15, 1963, several witnesses in Louisiana reported a V shaped or triangular object with a ball of light at its tip and a faint contrail. The first observers, on the ground near Lecompte and Kolin, saw it 30 to 35 degrees above the horizon in the southeast. The object looked about the size of a five cent piece at arm's length and moved rapidly to the south or southeast.
The object was also seen from the air. A Delta Airlines pilot on flight 677 near Shreveport watched it for about 10 minutes, and the pilot of an F-102 landing at New Orleans watched it for about 2 minutes, noting a bright trail about 3 miles long. The witnesses included civilians and military pilots, all rated reliable. Skies were clear with scattered clouds.
Eglin Air Force Base reported firing a meteorological rocket at about the time of the sightings. The Air Force, in its Project 10073 record, evaluated the case as a rocket. One officer also noted the object's extreme altitude and suggested possible re-entry of material from astronaut Cooper's flight.
