Summary

On August 1, 1956, a military witness in Shalimar, Florida, reported a single object. The sighting was recorded at 0155Z and lasted about six seconds.

The witness described one round, brilliant white object with slightly flattened sides, about the size of a pea held at arm's length. It seemed to twinkle or radiate like a star. The object first appeared as a stationary light, then moved very slowly in a horizontal, slightly downward path with no change in direction. It was first seen at 40 degrees azimuth and disappeared behind trees at 70 degrees azimuth.

The report came from Eglin Air Force Base. The Air Force concluded the sighting was caused by an aircraft light. The details matched the activity of an F-89 that carried a stroboscope light. The light was seen for only six seconds because trees blocked the view. The slow movement was explained by the aircraft flying away from the observer. The evaluation was aircraft.
