Project Blue Book Case File
Los Angeles, Calif, July 1961July 1961
Summary
In 1961, a civilian writer in the Los Angeles area reported a brief object sighting in a letter sent to a senior Air Force general. The reported event lasted only about half a second.
The Air Force found that the letter did not contain enough information to allow a reliable conclusion. Officials suggested sending the writer a standard questionnaire and asking follow up questions. These included how the half second duration was measured, whether the duration was the same for all sightings, and how many times the object was seen.
The Air Force also noted factors that affect such reports, such as aircraft altitude, wind, temperature, and the angles at which satellites cross lines of latitude. Because of the lack of detail, no firm conclusion was reached.
