Project Blue Book Case File
Las Vegas, NevadaJanuary 1954
Summary
On January 10, 1954, a spherical object was seen over Las Vegas, Nevada. The witness was a civilian rancher who noticed the object while tending livestock. He described one white object about 12 feet across. It sat at about 80 degrees elevation toward 340 degrees azimuth and appeared to stay in the same spot. There was no trail and no sound.
The man watched for about 13 minutes, then looked away to call Nellis Air Force Base. When he looked back, the object was gone. He was a former Air Force pilot with eleven years of service and was considered reliable.
The weather station said a weather balloon had been released from Nellis Air Force Base at 0705 local time. The balloon rose nearly straight up with a slight northward drift. The Air Force listed the case on its Project 10073 record, the official file for unidentified flying object reports, and concluded the sighting was the weather balloon.
