Summary

On September 26, 1960, a civilian near Jean, Nevada, reported an exploding object at 1015 (about 10:15 GMT), during night hours. The witness, awakened by his wife, saw a bright light about 30 degrees above the horizon moving north to south. He could not tell the shape until it seemed to explode, when it looked cigar shaped and about the size of a grapefruit at arm's length. The object was brilliant white until the explosion, then turned very vivid green that lasted about 15 seconds before fading to white. It seemed to burn up about 10 degrees above the horizon. The sighting lasted 25 to 30 seconds. The Air Force listed the case as a meteor, probably a large bolide that was unusually big and lasted longer than usual.
