Summary

On February 6, 1961, during the day, a weather forecaster about 8 miles east of Indian Springs, Nevada reported a shiny, half-moon shaped object about 5 feet in diameter, shadowed on the bottom. It appeared at about 47.8 degrees elevation and 144.7 degrees azimuth. The object moved slowly toward the north-northwest to east-southeast.

The witness was launching a pilot balloon when the object was seen and used a 22-power theodolite. The sighting lasted about 6 minutes. The witness did not watch the object disappear. There was a cloud cover of 6 to 8 tenths.

The Air Force conclusion was probably balloon. The comment notes the winds aloft were moving in the reported direction, the object was sighted about 15 minutes after the witness launched a balloon, and that balloon would have been in the reported position, so he very possibly mistook his own balloon for the object.
