Summary

On September 4, 1955, near Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, military witnesses reported an object. The observers were a pilot and a weather forecaster. The Air Force time stamp was 1258Z.

They described one spherical, orange-red object about the size of a dime held at arm's length. The whole object appeared to be blazing. Various colors were seen, but orange was the main color. When first seen the object looked stationary, but through a theodolite (a tracking instrument) it appeared to be moving slightly.

The Air Force concluded the object was a balloon. Records showed a weather balloon (number 97W) was in the east over Nellis at the time of the sighting, and the object was seen at 80 degrees azimuth, which confirmed the balloon evaluation.
