Summary
On August 10, 1962, a civilian pilot near Greenville, Maine, reported an unidentified object. He was at Upper Wilson Pond, about four miles east of Greenville. The time was 0815Z. The object was in sight for about 10 seconds.
The man described an unblinking yellow-white reflective light, slightly dimmer than the brightest stars. It was not distinct in shape from the stars around it. It made no sound and left no tail, trail, or exhaust. It moved at apparently very great speed. It first appeared in the southern sky, passed directly overhead on a course of about 360 degrees true, and was gone when he returned from telling his wife. The sky was clear.
The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force confirmed that aircraft from Loring Air Force Base were refueling over the area that night and that interceptors were flying low-altitude operations nearby. The Air Force tentatively evaluated the sighting as a refueling exercise or a low-altitude interceptor exercise.
