Project Blue Book Case File
HOULTON, MAINEAugust 1952
Summary
On the evening of August 2, 1952, a civilian woman in Houlton, Maine, saw a group of disc-shaped objects flying in formation. She watched them for about 35 minutes between 2129 and 2204 hours (9:29 p.m. and 10:04 p.m.). According to her account, there were many objects, and two or three would occasionally leave the formation but then return to it.
The witness described the objects as disc-shaped and very light in color. She estimated their speed at around 1,000 miles per hour, though the file notes her uncertainty about this figure. The objects disappeared suddenly from view. The witness was outdoors in open countryside when she observed them, and her husband was present and also saw the sighting. She had previous experience reporting unusual aerial phenomena to air traffic control.
In her additional comments, the witness noted that there had been constant forest fires in the area. She also mentioned that her husband had answered some of the questionnaire, and she believed the brightness of the objects differed from typical aircraft. One object remained motionless for a time while the others moved.
The U.S. Air Force evaluated this case as unidentified. The full case file, comprising 10 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
