Summary

In October 1960, residents of Clear Lake, Maine reported that an object had allegedly fallen from a great height and embedded itself in the ground, creating a hole about 14 inches in diameter. No aircraft were observed in the area at the time of the incident. One witness reported hearing what sounded like items striking the roof of a building.

The U.S. Air Force dispatched personnel to investigate. A reconnaissance of the area yielded negative results. During their inspection, investigators noted a possibility that a shotgun had been discharged in the area, with pellets landing on a building roof. The investigation found no physical evidence confirming the presence of any fallen object.

The Air Force's final evaluation listed the sighting as "unknown." However, the file suggests the most likely explanation was a shotgun discharge, with pellets striking nearby structures, rather than any object falling from the sky.
