Summary

On April 2, 1962, near Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada, an object was tracked on radar with no visual sighting. The object was picked up on three separate ground radars and by 16 military personnel, moving east at about 72 knots at roughly 7,000 feet over about 4 minutes. Two F-102 aircraft were scrambled and obtained radar lock-on for several passes, but made no visible contact. A radar analyst believed it was a solid object. The Air Force noted that a balloon released from Loring Air Force Base, Maine, could have drifted to that location, and that the speed and wind direction pointed to a lighter-than-air object. The record card concluded a balloon was the probable cause.
