Summary

On May 4, 1957, at 10:25 a.m., an airborne operations center mission at McClellan Air Force Base in California reported sighting a meteor-like object of yellowish-red color passing in front of the aircraft at 10,000 feet going in an east-west direction. A second object of similar description passed in front of the aircraft at 8,000 feet and was described as similar to an afterburner on an F-102. The observation lasted 5 to 8 seconds. Two USN submarines were reportedly in the area. Land-based radar detected no known aircraft in the area. Crew members speculated the USN's may have rocketed from a nearby danger area. The Air Force evaluation was negative, finding insufficient data for evaluation.
