Summary

On May 29, 1955, at Chitose Air Base in Japan, military control tower operators reported observing a round white object followed by smoke trailing with sparks and flames. The object descended slowly from an altitude of 3,000 to 4,000 feet and appeared to be attempting to land at the base. The sighting lasted 2 to 3 minutes. Two reliable Air Force tower operators reported the incident during night rain showers. The Air Force investigation concluded the object could have been an aircraft, and the trailing smoke and sparks were possibly caused by cloudy weather conditions and rain creating an illusion. The official evaluation listed the sighting as unknown.
