Summary

On May 24, 1962, observers near Albuquerque and Las Vegas, New Mexico, reported an object in the sky. It was first seen in daytime by both ground witnesses and an airborne aircraft crew. The object was watched for over nine hours.

The object was round, about the size of Venus seen in daytime. It was white during the day, pink at sunset, and dark at night. It appeared mostly stationary at high altitude, with a small amount of motion to the northeast before returning to its original position. It was seen with binoculars and was also tracked on an air route surveillance radar. Witnesses included flight service and air traffic control personnel and an aircraft pilot.

This report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. Later investigation found that a weather balloon was launched in the area and remained nearly stationary during this period. The Air Force concluded the object was probably a weather balloon.
