Project Blue Book Case File
Akron, OhioFebruary 1961
Summary
On February 22, 1961, a civilian in Akron, Ohio reported seeing a sharply outlined silvery object pass close overhead during the daytime. The object came within 600 feet of the observer and remained visible for about 30 seconds. The witness described it as solid and about the size of an automobile, with no brightness greater than the stars, and reported hearing a sound like 1,000 jets.
Despite these specific details about distance and duration, the witness was unable to provide consistent information about the object's speed, shape, or motion. The Air Force noted this contradiction in its file: the object appeared small enough to compare to a car yet was bright enough to be visible in daylight, yet no brighter than stars. These conflicting descriptions made the sighting difficult to evaluate.
The Air Force investigators classified the case as "insufficient data for evaluation." They added that because this was a single-witness sighting with contradictory details, they carried it as unexplained, though they suggested the case could possibly be classified differently if more information became available. No further analysis or conclusion appears in the file regarding what the object might have been.
