Summary
On April 25, 1961, the pilot of an RC-121D aircraft saw an object over the Pacific Ocean, near 42 degrees 50 minutes north and 134 degrees 11 minutes west. The sighting took place at night, around 5:40 a.m. (GMT), and lasted about 1 to 1.5 seconds. The pilot had 16 years and about 3,000 hours of flying time.
The object was a bright white lighted streak, brighter than a meteorite, about the size of a common pin. It trailed flame and sparks about seven times the length of the object. It appeared to fall vertically and then burned out. The aircraft was flying at 10,000 feet on a heading of about 160 degrees.
The pilot thought it might be a satellite reentry. The Air Force evaluated the case as a meteor sighting in all probability.
