Summary

On January 28, 1962, a MATS plane pilot observed a sighting near coordinates 13-42N 144-20E in the Pacific Ocean. A large bright explosion of a small object was seen for a few seconds on a northeast-southwest course, about 30 miles in front of the aircraft. The object had no tail. Observers at 8,000 feet altitude reported the object appeared to be about 7,000 feet high, just above a low cloud layer. The Air Force concluded the sighting had the characteristics of a meteor observation.
