Summary

On March 1, 1952, at 3:44 p.m. local time, an instrument instructor pilot with the 6th Air Rescue Squadron at Goose Air Base, Labrador, observed vapor trails at very high altitude while flying a NEAC C-47 at 5,000 feet over the base. The pilot reported the trails were caused by a fast-moving aircraft, probably a jet, flying at very high altitude in a northeasterly direction. The tower operator had no knowledge of other aircraft in the area. The pilot stated he had no doubt the vapor trails were real because he had seen them often while flying in Europe during World War II. Major R. Hange, pilot of the aircraft, confirmed the sighting. The Air Force concluded the sighting involved vapor trails from an aircraft.
