Project Blue Book Case File
Richmond, VirginiaAugust 1961
Summary
On the evening of August 5, 1961, a newspaper worker in Richmond, Virginia saw a brightly lit object moving across the night sky from east to west. As he was walking across his backyard near 8 or 9 p.m., he looked up and spotted what he believed at first might be an aerial tanker from the Tactical Air Command. The object stood out for its brightness and appeared to have its lights arranged like cabin windows, a pattern he thought might result from the aircraft banking slightly.
The witness checked with Tactical Air Command headquarters, which operated near Richmond, and learned they had no tankers in the area at that time. He also contacted the radar personnel at nearby Byrd Field, who reported nothing unusual on their screens that night. Despite these negative checks, he was inclined to believe the object was simply a civilian airliner with its cabin lights visible through the windows.
A separate report came in from Ashland, Virginia, located north of Richmond. A man there called with a striking account: he had witnessed a bright light that hovered stationary in the sky, then moved off, stopped abruptly, and reversed course to chase another airplane. When the Richmond observer realized that Ashland was north of him and his sighting had been to the north, while the Ashland sighting was to the south, he concluded both men had probably seen the same object. This connection prompted him to file an official report.
The Air Force investigation concluded that what both witnesses saw was most likely a refueling operation involving two aircraft. The Richmond sighting lasted approximately 30 seconds. The observer was a credible witness who worked in aviation journalism and stated clearly that he believed the object was definitely an aircraft. The case file includes 40 pages of documentation now held by the National Archives.
