Summary

On April 21, 1956, several civilians and two military Ground Observer Corps members at Richmond, Virginia, reported one object. The report came in by letter and was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.

The object was round on top and came to a point at the bottom, about the size of a basketball at arm's length. It was a light, translucent, silvery color and looked like a balloon. It moved slowly to the northeast at a high altitude and gradually disappeared. It was seen through two telescopes, one of 35 power. A light aircraft was sent to 6,000 feet to observe it. An F-94C made a short search of the area with negative results.

The Air Force concluded the sighting was caused by a balloon.
