Summary

On December 17, 1955, many people across Nebraska, Missouri, and Oklahoma reported strange objects in the sky. The Greenwich time was 0334Z on December 18. The reports came from civilians over a wide area.

Witnesses described streaks in the sky and the explosion of objects that looked like red and green flares. In Lincoln, Nebraska, a newspaper and a railroad yard reported loud explosions. A light aircraft near Kansas City reported it was almost hit by red and green flares. Reports came in from several states at about the same time. A check of local flying activity found no aircraft in the area at the time.

The case is filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. Because the sightings covered such a wide area, the Air Force conclusion was that the object was a meteor.
