Summary
On September 28, 1958, at dusk near New York, NY, a red and blue-white object was sighted traveling west. The object broke into three parts and disappeared instantly. The observation lasted three seconds. Both civilian and military sources reported the sighting. The description is characteristic of a meteor. Airport traffic control at Idlewild reported an object eight hundred to one thousand feet altitude traveling west instantaneously. A TWA flight crew saw a bright light and thought it was a meteor. The Air Force concluded the sighting was probably a balloon.
