Summary
# Miami UFO Sighting, January 1962
On the evening of January 25, 1962, five young members of the Miami Astronomical Association gathered at a private home in southwest Miami to observe the night sky. At approximately 9:25 p.m., all five witnesses noticed four diffuse objects moving across the sky from south to north. The objects appeared at first as a hazy line, then separated into four distinct disc-shaped forms after three or four seconds. The witnesses described the objects as reddish-yellow to reddish-orange in color, roughly the size of Saturn as seen through a six-inch telescope. They traveled in a straight line that changed to a flat diamond formation and moved faster than jet aircraft. The entire sighting lasted about twenty seconds before the objects disappeared toward the northwest, obscured by the glare of Miami's city lights.
The Air Force investigated the case thoroughly. Airmen from the 19th Bombardment Wing at Homestead Air Force Base interviewed all five witnesses, who appeared knowledgeable about astronomy but were noted as young and inexperienced. The witnesses supplied one photograph, a poor-quality ten-minute time exposure taken by one observer using a homemade camera. The Air Force checked with local airports, military bases, radar stations, and the Coast and Geodetic Survey to verify whether any aircraft, rockets, satellites, or other objects were in the area at the time. All checks returned negative results. Weather conditions were clear with good visibility. A photo analysis by Air Force technicians suggested the changing position of aircraft lights as the most probable cause of the sighting, though the report also listed meteoric fragments and the satellite Echo I as possibilities.
The case file notes that the objects possessed characteristics resembling fast aircraft at medium altitude and showed no threatening behavior. The Air Force concluded that the sighting was likely a misidentification of aircraft lights, though the file itself states the case as "unidentified." The 16-page case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives.
