Project Blue Book Case File
London, England, August 1955August 1955
Summary
On August 15, 1955, at about 2100 local time (9 p.m.) near Ruislip, in northwest London, England, two people saw a light in the night sky. The witnesses were the wife of an observer and a United States Air Force staff sergeant assigned to the 7th Air Division.
They reported one round, white, steady light. It was slightly larger than a star and glowed brightly. It made no sound and left no trail. The light moved across the sky from north to south on a straight path with no maneuvers, then was lost behind a house.
The sighting lasted about 3 to 5 minutes. About 5 minutes later, an aircraft was seen on a similar flight path at an estimated altitude of about 5,000 feet. The night was clear with no clouds and no moon visible.
An Air Force officer's preliminary analysis suggested the object was likely a meteor crossing the sky at high altitude, though he noted the long viewing time seemed excessive for a meteor. The date fell within the period of an annual meteor shower. The record card listed the case as possibly aircraft.
