Project Blue Book Case File
Kauai, HawaiiApril 1963
Summary
On April 22, 1963, a civilian resident of Port Allen on the island of Kauai, Hawaii reported seeing a reddish light in the night sky. The object was about the same size and color as a star and appeared roughly 80 degrees above the horizon (nearly straight overhead). It moved from the northwest toward the southeast or east over the course of about four minutes.
At the time of the sighting, jet aircraft were conducting a high altitude test run in the area with their afterburners engaged. The Air Force noted that the object's description and behavior matched what an afterburner-equipped jet would look like at high altitude under those conditions. Based on this information, the Air Force evaluated the case as an aircraft.
