Project Blue Book Case File
Hamilton AFB, CaliforniaJune 1950
Summary
On June 21, 1950, at about 1:38 a.m., observers at Hamilton Air Force Base, California, reported a fast object in the sky. The case is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record system for unidentified flying object reports. The witnesses were military men in the control tower and at another observation post.
They described an object trailing a blue green streak of flame. One observer said the flame looked like a blow torch, not a jet plane. The object made three separate passes across the field. Because of its speed and the darkness, the men could not tell its shape. An early report credited it with a speed of 1,000 to 1,500 miles per hour, though observers later said speed was hard to judge at night.
Air Force intelligence questioned the observers. A public information officer said no planes were over the field at the time. The record card notes the main report and card are missing from the file, and lists the conclusion as insufficient data.
