Gardena, CaliforniaJune 1957
Summary
On June 16, 1957, during the day, a civilian married couple in Gardena, California reported a sighting. The observation lasted about nine minutes. The sky was clear.
The witnesses saw one small round shiny object about the size of a half dollar held at arm's length. It was moving up and continued up and out of sight. A fighter from North Island was scrambled but could not find the object, and no other observers or radar units in the area saw it.
The Air Force record (Project 10073, its official file for unidentified flying object reports) lists the case as a balloon. The controller noted several balloon releases in the area and considered a balloon a possible cause.
