Summary

On December 16, 1953, between about 5:30 and 6:15 a.m. near Fort Belvoir, Virginia, five military members reported two objects. The witnesses were members of an engineer pipeline company. Three were interviewed by intelligence officers. The objects were watched for about 45 minutes.

The first object was bright and luminous, without a definite shape, to the west southwest. A second, smaller object became visible later. Both were about as intense as star light. They changed color at irregular times, showing red, blue, and green. Both moved erratically and independently, with short, jerky movements, moving closer, farther, and sideways. The first faded beyond the horizon at about 6 a.m. The second was lost as dawn light grew at about 6:15.

A guard at a nearby field reported no unusual objects. The Air Force record lists the conclusion as astronomical, sun dogs. It noted the time and movement pointed to possible sun dogs.
