Project Blue Book Case File
Fairbanks, AlaskaAugust 1962
Summary
On August 11, 1962, an engineer for the city of Fairbanks, Alaska, reported a sighting from about 50 to 60 miles southwest of Fairbanks. The time was between about 0832Z and 0930Z, between twilight and night. The object was in sight for about 4 seconds.
The man saw a round white object that looked like a penny at first and grew to the size of a silver dollar. It dropped three or four smaller white and blue streaked objects, each about one fourth the size of the main body, which quickly burned out. The main object had red and blue exhaust like Fourth of July fireworks. It disappeared into the clouds. There were a few scattered clouds and good visibility. No radar in the area picked up anything and no aircraft were in the area.
The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force said the sighting was probably a meteor, noting that all the characteristics were present.
