Project Blue Book Case File
Haines, AlaskaJune 1949
Summary
On June 8, 1949, at about 0852 (8:52 a.m.), the crew of a military aircraft reported an object near Haines, Alaska. The plane was about 70 miles northwest of Juneau, flying at about 14,000 feet. The Air Force conclusion was "insufficient data." The report became part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
The pilot saw the object directly in front of the aircraft and swerved off course to avoid a collision. He woke the copilot to view it. The two described it as a very bright ball of light, blue-green in color. It had no tail and did not appear to have an exhaust like a jet. Its course was about 255 degrees.
The object passed across the sky and then gradually disappeared, like the rear light of a train moving away. The crew could not measure its speed but said it was extremely fast, faster than jet aircraft they had seen. They guessed it might be around 600 miles per hour. A passenger said he also saw it. The interrogating officer noted both observers were experienced pilots of normal intelligence and that this report resembled another report of a blue-green ball.
