Summary
On July 5, 1956, near Fairbanks, Alaska, civilian observers reported one object at about 11:07 a.m. local time. It was a ground visual sighting. The object was in view for 30 minutes during daylight.
The object was oval. It looked about the size of a basketball when first seen and shrank to the size of a silver dollar when last seen. It had no discernible features and no trail or exhaust. There was no sound. Its color was silver. The object seemed to flicker or pulsate and did not move. It was finally covered by a cloud and disappeared.
The sky was fairly clear with good visibility. A weather balloon had been released from a location 13 miles away at the time of the sighting. The star Procyon was in the same position as the object. The Project 10073 record card, the official record for unidentified flying object reports, concluded the sighting was a balloon, and the preparing officer noted it could have been the weather balloon or the star.
