Project Blue Book Case File
Derby, ColoradoSeptember 1958
Summary
Between September 18 and October 20, 1958, a civilian in Derby, Colorado, took a 35mm color slide of a B-47 vapor trail in a southwest direction from his home. When he later projected the slide, he noticed a red dot in the picture that he had not seen when taking it. He recalled taking the photo in the evening and said there were no other aircraft in the air. In November 1958 he gave the slide to Air Force investigators for examination.
The Air Force photo lab at the Air Technical Intelligence Center analyzed the slide. They found the red dot was a perforation of one or two layers of the film emulsion. When the slide was held at an angle to a light source, a small rise with a pit at the center could be seen. The Air Force conclusion on the Project 10073 record card was that the red dot was a flaw in the film, not an object. Project 10073 was the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
